Deliverance: Cars

In the Deliverance garage:

1991 Toyota Sera (phase 1)

(Red, with decals in the style of Kaneda's bike from Akira) Plates: ら53.24 + stolen/fabricated plates

This car is mostly used for shorter runs within the Tokyo area, and was Masa's car at the time when they started Deliverance; they've worked on it a bit, but not a lot can really be done with it mechanically.  It's light and manoeuverable but not that fast, with a not particularly impressive top speed of around 195km/h.  The rear seat is capable of fitting people but is rarely used like that, and never for more than one person.  It's not actually a Kei but close, with a 1.5L engine.  The car is tuned somewhat but has only upgraded suspension, a new programmable ECU and a more responsive gearbox designed for better acceleration as far as aftermarket performance parts go.  Visually there are more modifications - most notably the decals copied from Kaneda's bike in Akira, but also the wheels, which are colour-matched to the body and given green chrome edging to emulate the 'ceramic rotor drive' on the bike.

1999 Nissan Cedric Y31

(Black, "chuo taxi" markings) Plates: は20.26 + stolen/fabricated plates

This sleeper car has its standard engine swapped with a turbocharged RB20DET, with a stroker kit fitted to increase displacement from 2L to 2.4L.  It also has Wilwood disc brakes front and rear, two-position adjustable suspension, a pop-up spoiler integrated into bootlid, a dual exhaust system on a valve to switch between stealth mode (which uses the stock exhaust and silencer) and speed mode (which moves the exhaust straight backwards and then down near the back axle, unsilenced). The battery has been moved to the passenger footwell to make space for the engine modifications. There's armour around the rear seats and fuel tank.  Carries generic taxi markings, and the adjustable suspension, exhaust and spoiler, plus removable taxi sign for the roof, all work to make the car capable of switching roles from getaway car to anonymous taxi very rapidly.  It's not immune to close scrutiny, though - the wheels are original, whereas the tyres are performance Michelin types that are clearly a cut above ordinary Cedric tyres, and the spoiler is noticeable up-close.  The car has creditable performance, but just isn't capable of serious speeds.  This was Neil and Masa's first 'work' car - the one they used to get started, and the one they've both worked on most.

2015 Audi S7

(Black) Plates: (real) か-9.19/ (shutter) ま-7.63

This car is used for passenger carrying runs when speed and stealth need to be balanced. It's not that conspicuous, and the exterior has been de-tuned to look like a stock A7, but the engine (4L V8 @ 420 bhp +57 tuned in = 477bhp), transmission (7-speed tiptronic dual clutch gearbox) and suspension (air system) is almost at RS7 standards; it can hit 100km/h in 4.5 seconds and the car is comfortable at 150+mph. Masa took it to 301km/h (nearly 190mph) at a track day once.  The plates are reversible. Additionally there is some armour added to the rear and around the 65L fuel tank.  This is now Deliverance's most frequently-used car.

2000 Subaru Forester 2.5L

(Green/silver, ) Plates: い22.13 + stolen/fabricated plates

This car is rather underpowered compared to most of Deliverance's cars, but is a backup, being the most recently acquired car they have.  It was originally acquired as a temporary off-road car until the Space Hilux is finished, but that project being stalled, it is the best option as a backup, after the main load carrying car was damaged in a collision during a previous run.  It is however arguably Deliverance's best vehicle for use on rough, non-tarmac roads like mountain trails - this was the original reason for buying it, but both Neil and Masa are still disappointed by it.  The car is lifted about 10cm with off-road suspension and tyres, bullbar, factory roof bars, roof box (not installed), spotlights front and rear.  The plan was to use it .  The car's engine is a little tuned, but has mostly stock components.

2011 Dodge Challenger R/T; 'Blackbird'

(Matte black with SR71-style trim)  Plates: す52.71 + cover plate

Deliverance used the Challenger for work only rarely, to carry small loads when speed is of the utmost concern - the car topped out at 290kph and reached 100kph in 3.2 seconds, with a 5.7L HEMI engine originally rated at 375hp alongside a 6-speed manual transmission.  It was mostly used at night, and was equipped with both auxiliary ultra-bright lights and a hand-held spotlight, but also carried night vision equipment and had a kill switch for the instrument lights; it also had a matte black paint scheme, although it had red detailing over the bodywork and around the windows in the style of the SR71B Blackbird, and to complete the theme a 'tail number' and 'tail art' on the C-pillars.  Masa loved this car and used it for fun alone or with Neil for work.

1986 Toyota TownAce 4WD; 'Space Hilux'

(Metallic bronze/black details; half-finished) Plates: none

A project being worked on to give them a true off-road load-carrying car, using most of the mechanicals of a Hilux with the passenger carrying cabin of a Space Cruiser/TownAce.  The project is stalled as the components they wanted to use don't fit and a redesign of how to integrate everything is needed.

2006 Honda Odyssey Absolute 2.5L 4WD

(Dark grey; damaged) Plates: ふ18.31 + stolen/fabricated plates

Damaged in a collision with a truck, this is currently without its rear right wheel or suspension components.  A faster and sleeker load carrier than the Subaru, this car was the second most used vehicle Deliverance run.  Its rear seats are understuffed so as to fold more flat, and are usually left folded, and the rear windows are tinted a dark black to keep the load private.

1984 Audi Quattro

(silver -> matte black, J model; project car, incomplete) Plates: あ19.84

This car was originally a passion project for Masa and Neil; the car has never reached full functionality but was continually being added to when parts become available, leading to the car being about 80% functional.  This car is resprayed, mocked up and sacrificed in order to allow them to get away cleanly, and replaced by:

1988 Audi Quattro A2

(white/blue/orange -> matte black) Plates: none

A complete and functional rally-spec Quattro; as a part of Yamashita's promise to buy them a car, Suzu and Neil demand this as their vehicle for the prison break decoy getaway.  It's a little worn and Suzu is skeptical about some of the car’s systems, so they hybridise it with their own unfinished one and keep the best of both; the lesser options are added to the sacrifice car. This one when finished features:

  • full rollcage

  • fully seam-welded body

  • lightweight plexiglass windows

  • 2.1L 20-valve, five-cylinder inline turbocharged engine (‘RR’ code, made 1990) with anti-lag ECU and hand-built block stroker kit making over 450BHP.

  • adjustable Reiger gravel-spec suspension

  • Torsen differentials

  • fuel radiator

  • top-of-the-line Bosch fuel pump and injection system

  • skid plates along the entire underside

  • Safari Rally-style tubular steel bullbars at both ends, both detachable while in motion

  • as much waterproofing of the electrical system as possible

  • powerful LED lights

  • intercom system with a noise-cancelling circuit and aux-in socket

  • siren finder (similar to the one in Tsuba’s Starion)

  • police siren and red strobe

  • Full lighting kill switches

  • Matte black paint

Plus of course Suzu's car:

1993 Lancia Delta HF Integrale Evoluzione II

(white, Martini Racing stripe on sides) Plates (real) り83.04/ (shutter) ら--.-6

A similar passion-project-turned-necessity, this rally classic homologation model is a jack-of-all-trades car capable of carrying two passengers and a co-driver at high speeds on all terrains.  It's a bit fragile, expensive to fix and hard to get spares for, but if it's running well it's a fine vehicle.  The car is mechanically highly tuned, but also has Speedline Montecarlo wheels, Pirelli tyres, a basic but effective roll cage and four small high-power LED lights on the lip of the bonnet.  Suzuka has also rigged a shutter on the licence plates to display fakes and a corresponding ETC identity.  The car has its original white paint, and also has Martini stripes on the sides, but not original - these are entirely straight stripes front to back, unlike the flared stripes of the official Martini 5 or Martini 6 editions.

And guest starring:

1985 Lamborghini Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole ‘Turbo SN’

(midnight blue, US spec) Plates:く50.00

Officially designated the 'Turbo SN' by Kumazawa in honour of Stradale Nippon, Suzu was a part of the team there that helped restore, dismantle, blueprint, rebuild, modify, upgrade and tune it while at Guido's garage.  While it's the US spec car, it's had the side skirts and federal bumpers removed.  It has original Campagnolo wheels refinished in light metallic blue, and a set of Pirelli P7 tyres.  The 5.2L V12 engine is fuel injected with a more modern and higher performance system than the original, with the centrepiece of the modifications being a twin-scroll turbo with adjustable pressure installed by Guido and Suzu, meaning the car now develops 565bhp and is estimated to be capable of over 320km/h.  It was given power steering, more powerful brakes and smoothed air intake ducts.  It also has a remodeled interior, a modified front spoiler from the LP400S installed on the front with new built-in LED lights that make the headlights obsolete, and a reverse camera installed; it has light blue underglow lighting, but Neil removes it.  Instead he uses the mountings for the federal bumper to mount a bullbar that wraps around to the front of the wheelarches.

VERSUS

2011 Toyota HiAce

(white) - Tsuba's van

A mechanically unremarkable vehicle, this is special only in the interior modifications, which include a massive array of electronics.  It's essentially an entire workshop on wheels.

1996 Honda NSX-T; 'Aiko'

(white - Atsushi's car, Tsuba riding shotgun)

Atsushi's pride and joy, a highly modified first-generation Targa roof NSX with a C32B engine from a 2003 NSX-R, Rocket bunny bolt-on widebody kit with wider suspension track, remodeled (low/flat) functional roof scoop, front and rear carbon fibre canards, Car shop Glow LED lighting at rear and LED headlights with 'low-profile pop' mod, red cold cathode underlighting.

1987 Mitsubishi Starion GSR-VR

metallic green (Tsuba and Atsushi)

Tsuba's own car.  Not a lot of mods - externally stock.  Mostly electronics are modified, including a directional microphone tuned to pick up police car sirens.

Honourable mentions:

2011 Isuzu Elf Diesel-Electric Hybrid (silver, with tipping bed and winch) - A flatbed car carrier driven by Maon for Deliverance at times.  Too big to be kept in the garage, it is parked on an empty piece of land around the corner.

1986 Maserati Biturbo Si (Red/black, Italian spec) - Car belonging to the Morelli family, who Suzu lived with for several months in Palermo; their pride and joy, but was rather worn out when she arrived.  Suzu mechanically restored the car and in the process and nearly doubled the power output to nearly 270bhp, well beyond its original spec when new, with rear window louvres, new 5-spoke alloy wheels and Momo steering wheel added.  She and Massimo Morelli drove it all the way up Italy to watch the 55th Rallye Sanremo.
